Highland Terrace Residents,In partnership with Highland Terrace Neighborhood Association and Highland Terrace Crime Watch Patrol, the Richardson Police Department is actively seeking residents in the HT area to join the HT Crime Watch Patrol. CWP is comprised of residents in the community who volunteer their time to patrol their neighborhoods in an effort to prevent and reduce crime. By being the “eyes and ears” of their neighborhood, residents are able to act as a visible deterrent to neighborhood crime.
Participants of CWP attend a 4 hour training school taught by officers of the Crime Prevention Unit. This training session covers neighborhood concerns, and how to identify suspicious activity. CW patrollers can patrol their neighborhood at their convenience, and can commit as little as 2 hours a month.
If you are interested in being apart of HT CWP and making a difference in your neighborhood, please contact the Richardson Police Department Crime Prevention Unit.

On 11/29/10 at 12:13pm, Richardson Police were dispatched to the Metro PCS located at 1401 E. Arapaho Rd in reference to an aggravated robbery. The employee advised that a male suspect entered the store, waited until other customers had left and then displayed a handgun and demanded money. The employee complied with the demand and the suspect then fled the location in a vehicle, traveling northbound on N. Plano Rd. After the suspect left, the employee immediately called 9-1-1 and provided a vehicle description.Officers responding to the scene arrived in the area quickly and observed a vehicle matching the description in the area of E. Renner Rd. and N. Plano Rd. The vehicle was stopped in Plano at Plano Rd. and Plano Pkwy. and the driver and passenger arrested after the driver was identified by the victim. Money and a handgun were recovered from the vehicle and suspects.

From Officer Mike:Southeast Richardson (E. Buckingham Rd. and S. Jupiter Rd.)And released the same day:On 11-17-10 at 12:28 am, RPD was dispatched to the rear driveway of 13XX Buckingham Place, in reference to a burglary of a vehicle in progress. Officers arrived on scene and contacted the resident who had pinned the burglar in the driver's seat of the car, by holding the driver's side door closed until Officers arrived.
The resident said that he had parked his car in the rear driveway and ran into the house with the intent to return to his car so he left the window down and the door unlocked. Approximately three minutes after being inside the resident returned to his car and observed a male sitting in the driver seat. The resident stated he closed the door and pinned the male in the car.
The subject was arrested and charged with Burglary of a Motor Vehicle. This subject had come to this neighborhood on foot from Garland, just across the street on E. Buckingham Rd. You should be suspicious of anyone walking through the neighborhood at this time of night and if you happen to be awake and see this activity, reporting it would be a good idea. It may turn out to be nothing, but we would much rather have a patrol Officer check it out than let it go unreported.
It's always a good idea to secure your vehicle whenever you leave it unoccupied, as in this case, it only takes minutes for something to happen. This resident was lucky and things turned out well, however consider the outcome if this criminal had a gun or had another person with him as a lookout.

Northwest Richardson (W. Campbell and Custer Pkwy)On 11/17/2010, at 10:00am, RPD was dispatched to the area of Cap Rock Dr. and Lawnmeadow Dr. in reference to two males in a vehicle driving slowly in the area. A patrol Officer located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Both subjects had a criminal history that included burglary. Warrants were found for one individual. Both subjects were arrested and then drugs were found on one of the subjects.
A good example of how Neighborhood Crime Watch can be effective. Watching out for suspicious activity and calling to report it can result in criminals being removed from our neighborhoods. This vehicle was observed driving slowly, circling the area, and was not recognized as being one normally seen in the neighborhood. Considering the time of day and when home burglaries occur, our alert citizen decided to report it. This obviously doesn't always result in an arrest being made, but in this case, these guys won't have an opportunity to commit any crimes.

Southeast Richardson (E. Belt Line Rd. and Yale Blvd.)Attempted Robbery
On 11/12/10 at 2:00pm Officers were dispatched to 17XX E. Belt Line Rd in reference to an attempted robbery. The victim said three subjects (two black females and one black male) attempted to take her purse off her arm while she was walking in the parking lot of the shopping center. The three subjects drove up in a white four door sedan (unknown make/model/year/license plate) and approached her asking for a dollar. One of the black females (wearing a black jacket and black jeans) attempted to take her purse but was unsuccessful. The victim described all three suspects as being 13-18 years old.

Seized criminal video footage from Europe, that shows a good example of criminals installing a camera and skimming device on an ATM, then the video shows people that use the ATM and how the camera captures the PIN, and then people that take the extra step to cover their PIN and how effective it can be to prevent them from being a victim.
- Protect your PIN by standing close to the ATM and shielding the key pad with your other hand.
- Check to see if anything looks unusual or suspicious about the ATM. If it appears to have anything stuck onto the card slot or key pad, do not use it. Cancel the transaction and walk away. Never try to remove suspicious devices.
- Be cautious if strangers offer to help you at an ATM, even if your card is stuck or you're having difficulties. Don't allow anyone to distract you.
- Where possible, use an ATM which is in clear view and well lit.
- Check that other people in the queue are a reasonable distance away from you.
- Keep you PIN secret. Never reveal it to anyone, even someone who claims to be calling from your bank or a police officer.
- Avoid opening you purse, bag or wallet when you're in the queue. Put your money away immediately.
- Regularly check your account balance and bank statements, and report any discrepancies to your bank immediately.

- attend the class[es] RPD schedules for you. Currently the classes are offered 4x/year.
- do a checkride with your patrol's coordinator
- patrol in your personal vehicle on a whenever convenient and most rewarding for you. Minimums are two hours patrol and one hour meeting a month. Easy and fun.
If you have applied before and not heard back from RPD, go ahead and resubmit. The approval and training program have seem to have become more efficient recently.
