The Johnston’s Tree

My good neighbors Kevin and Erin Johnston have a fascinating yard piece I wanted to highlight for the neighborhood newsletter this month. Here is the question and answer session we had about their tree sculpture.

What events lead you to decide to create the tree sculpture?
- We had a giant beautiful Live Oak that had been in decline for several years. After trying to save it with an arborist, we decided it was best to remove the entire tree because a large section was over the house.
Where did the idea come from?
- We had decided to remove the entire tree, but our neighbor, Brian Arthur, jokingly remarked I should use my chainsaw to carve something in it and the idea was born.
Who did you contact to create the sculpture?
- I spent a month looking all over DFW and the southwest for someone to carve our beautiful oak. I am not that artistic and you only have one shot to get this right. During my search I stumbled upon a guy out in West Texas, Cam Dockery of Bearly Making It Chainsaw Carvings (Texassaw.com). His workmanship and level of detail were exceptional. We sent Cam an email with our ideas and a few pictures of other carvings for inspiration, he sent back a sketch and we immediately knew this was the right person to commission for our tree carving.
What made you choose a Fox?
- We had debated either making it a Little Free Library for neighbors to exchange books or an animal of some kind. Our daughter, June, two-years-old at the time has always loved foxes so we decided to lean towards a fox design.
Any advice you would give others that would like to do a similar project?
- Make sure to get it done in a timely manner as we received a warning from the city in the week between chopping the top and the trunk being carved. Also if you have a large trunked tree, the cost of getting it carved is not much more than the cost of removing the entire tree and grinding the stump.
What is the process to care for the sculpture now that it is finished?
- Every 6-12 months you should seal it again which is really simple. Our artist will also stop by if he is in town doing another carving to check on it and seal it if needed.
What kinds of things have people said to you about it? Funny comments?
- Becoming “the fox house” has given us the chance to meet more of our neighbors and when we are outside, we receive compliments from people walking or driving by, some even ask to stop and take a picture with it. Once a guy stopped by and asked “What type of dog is that? I’ve never seen Dog like that.” That comment really made me laugh.

School is out and kids are about. Please remember to slow down when driving through the neighborhood. I biggest offense are on Polk, Grove, Frances Way, and Abrams. Although everyone who receives this newsletter are aware and it is normally people that do not live here. If you see an unsafe vehicle please call 911 immediately and do your best to get car color and plates if you have time. Always be safe!

Westbound Spring Valley Road Closure Possible

Westbound Spring Valley between Bowser Road and College Park Boulevard could be closed at all times through late July for pavement repairs. The project is part of the City’s 2019 annual street repair program.

The latest problem in our neighborhood has been the theft of Amazon packages and deliveries from porches. Try to bring the package in as quickly as possible. Another solution to the problem could be to have things delivered to a remote location such as amazon boxes. There is a situation of people coming into unlocked houses so please keep all doors locked even when everyone is in the house.

Unlocked Cars are still the biggest problem in the area.
Please let Richardson police know if there is a break in. They keep information of other issues around town.

The Network of Community Ministries is looking for committed and passionate volunteers to assist us for 3 hours a week with feeding your neighbors in our Food Pantry, clothing your community in our Clothing Closet, or serve as a Client Intake Specialist by interviewing and qualifying our clients.

We would love for you to come volunteer with us! We have an orientation every Thursday at 4:00 PM that includes a tour so you can see what area you would like to help with and complete the necessary paperwork. No appointment needed, just come on in! Orientation usually lasts about 30 minutes. Please note our hours of operation and volunteer time frames are Monday- Thursday 9-6 and Friday 9-12. Our location is 741 S. Sherman Street, Richardson TX 75082
